Visual Journal Assignment #3

Due: Monday, January 6th
For this visual journal assignment, you are going to be designing a movie poster for your favorite film.
Movie posters are a way to advertise a film and to give audiences a sneak peak at what a movie may look like.
In your movie poster, you should include the following:
  • The name of your film written in an interesting way that goes along with the feel of the movie
  • Images that go along with the film
This should be your original take on a movie poster. You should not copy a preexisting movie poster.

Also, your movie poster needs to be school appropriate. Please do not choose any R-Rated movies or movies that are violent or gory.

For your paragraph, please explain to me why you chose the movie that you did and how you feel like your poster is a good representation of the film.

Visual Journal Assignment #2

Visual Journal Assignment #2
Due: Monday, December 16th

For this visual journal assignment, you will be designing a post card from a destination of your choice. Postcards usually feature landmarks from the location or images of things the location is well known for.

Your postcard design destination can be somewhere you’ve been in the past or it may be a location you’d like to visit in the future.

For the postcard design, you need to include the following:

*  Visual elements that come from the destination you’ve chosen. For example you may wish to include Big Ben if you’ve chosen London or the Coliseum if you’ve chosen Rome. You could also include geographical landmarks like Mt. Fuji for Japan or a tropical beach for Jamaica

* The name of your destination written in interesting writing

For your paragraph, you will write to a friend/family member about what you’ve done or would like to do in your destination of choice. For example, if you chose Hawaii, you could talk about how you went to the beach or how you visited lava flows.

Visual Journal Assignment #1

Visual Journal Assignment #1
Due: Monday, December 9th

A skateboard deck is the actual board a skateboard is made of. The flat, long, oval, is made from 7 plys of wood, usually maple, laminated together. Decks are often decorated with graphics from the company that makes them.

Mrs. Walkers's skateboard deck example
For your first visual journal assignment, you will be creating a personal skateboard deck. Imagine that you were hired by a skateboarding company to create a deck that reflects your own personality and style, but also a deck that you could market to the general public.

Your design should be drawn in the shape of an actual deck (long oval) and it should take up an entire page in your sketchbook. If you would like to work on a larger scale, Mrs. Walker has larger drawing paper available.

Remember, even though this deck design reflects your own personal style, it should still look like a well thought out artistic design. Think about how to make a design that works well with the long, oval format of the board shape.

Along with your design you will write a paragraph (at least four sentences) as to how you came up with your deck design and how it reflects who you are as a person.

Visual Journal Assignment #12

Due: Monday, November 18th

This will be your last visual journal assignment of the term. Since it is the last visual journal assignment for the term, I am giving you the chance to generate your own topic.

You may create a drawing or an illustration of anything you chose. Perhaps you create a drawing in the style of an artist of your choice, or you use a topic you’ve learned about in art this past term to inspire you.

For your assignment you must create a drawing or an illustration on a sheet of paper that uses the whole sheet. You will then write a paragraph describing to me what inspired you in this final visual journal assignment.

This is a chance to not only show me your own style, but also your own sense of creativity. Just like any other visual journal assignment, it is essential that you put in an adequate amount of time and effort.

This must be a new drawing you create this week, and not a drawing or sketch you’ve done in the past.

Cool, Crazy Shoes!

Last week the visual journal assignment I assigned asked students to draw the craziest, coolest, most creative pair of shoes they could think of.

I was blown away that three of my sixth graders actually created their "crazy shoes". Check out the awesome designs they came up with below!

Tim made these awesome mustache duct tape shoes that he could actually wear!

Danielle made these fun, whimsical high heels

Visual Journal Assignment #11

 Due: Tuesday, November 12th

The shoes you decide to wear may reflect your personal style, your athletic interest or what mood you may be in that day.

For this visual journal assignment, you will be designing your very own pair of shoes. But these won’t be just any regular pair of shoes. You are to design, the most over the top, crazy, original shoes you can think of.

Perhaps your shoes have a real game-boy in them to show your love of gaming.

Maybe you create a pair of shoes entirely out of computer hardware or a pair of whimsical, topsy-turvy high heels.

Think big and over the top!

For your paragraph, you will describe to me what inspired you to create your crazy shoe creation

Visual Journal Assignment #10

Due: Monday, November 4th

Champ is the name given to a reputed lake monster living in Lake Champlain, a natural freshwater lake in North America, partially situated across the U.S.-Canada border in the Canadian province of Quebec and partially situated across the Vermont-New York border.

There is no scientific evidence for the creature's existence, there have been over 300 reported sightings. The legend of the monster is considered a draw for tourism in the Burlington, Vermont and Plattsburgh, New York areas (Mrs. Walker’s home town!).

Descriptions of Champ vary, but most suggest a creature between 20 and 80 feet long, with a series of distinct humps along a serpentine body. Some say the head looks like a snake or a dog.

Other suggest the creature looks like a Plesiosaurs.  Similar to that of "Nessie" of Loch Ness in Scotland, many people theorize that Champ is a surviving Plesiosaur. Plesiosaurs were a group of extinct Sauropterygian reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era and died out around 65.5 million years ago.

For this visual journal assignment, you will create an illustration of what you think Champy, the Lake Champlain Monster may look like. You may use the description above or come up with your own interpretation.

Champy has even become the name and mascot of Vermont's minor league baseball team
For your paragraph, describe to me how you came up with design of “Champy” and if you think it’s possible or not for the creature to exist.
